Henry Mays [m.2.7]

Henry Mays was the seventh child of Richard Mays & Caroline Roser christened June 4th, 1848 at East Grinstead, Sussex.

By 1851 the family were living at Box Cottage, East Grinstead & Henry & 3 older brothers were the only children at home.

Henry was still living at home in 1861 at Box Cottage & he was working as an agricultural labourer , as were his 2 brothers, Charles & George.  Younger sister Maria was also at home

Henry was still at home in 1871 with his father & his step-mother Mary, sister Maria & half-brother William (7 months). They were living at Box Farm, East Grinstead. Henry was described as a farmer’s son.

By 1881 Henry had moved to St Georges Hanover, Westminster, London & was living at 29 Half Moon St.  He was employed as a servant for Cecil Boyle, a member of the stock exchange, & his family.

Henry married Mary Jane Gold on December 12th, 1888, at St Saviour’s, Chelsea.  Henry gave his address as 1 Oriental Place, Brighton & he was a lodging house keeper & Mary was of 37 Exeter St. Witnesses at the wedding were E. Gold, Richard Gold & John Mays, probably Henry’s brother. Mary was christened September 19th, 1851 at St Marylebone, London, the daughter of Mary Ann & Richard Gold, a dairyman.

In 1891 Henry & Mary were living at 1 Oriental Place, Brighton where Henry was a lodging house keeper.  Henry’s half-sister Mary [m.2.11], aged 18 years, was living with them.

They were still living in Brighton, now 34 Oriental Place, in 1901 & Henry continued to be a lodging house keeper.  Half-sister Mary was still with them & they had a domestic servant.

By 1911 Henry had retired & he & Mary were living at 325 Ewell Rd, Tolworth, Surbiton, Surrey.

There is a death for Mary J Mays, aged 70, registered in Jan-March 1922 in Kingston, Surrey.

Henry died on June 11th, 1933 at 176 Ellerton Rd, Tolworth, Surrey.  Probate of his estate was granted to Emma Mays, widow, & William Richard Taylor, rent collector.  His effects were £2,763.8s.3d.
